Located in Southwestern Ohio, a rural agricultural county rich with an abundance of natural wonders, and yet convenient to 3 major cities. Approximately a one hour drive to Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus, the best of both worlds are easily enjoyed by our residents. Hillsboro is the seat of Highland County.
Highland County is named for its rolling hills and highland topography. Highland County could be seen as a borderline county. With plains to the north (Clinton and Fayette counties) and edge of the Appalachian Mountains to the southeast, Highland County boasts a variety of landscapes and beautiful scenery.
Blessed in community and history, Highland County celebrated its bicentennial in 2005! Charming covered bridges, magnificent court houses, historic school buildings, and other landmarks accent our already scenic, wooded, rolling hillsides. If you like outdoor recreation, Highland County is at the top of the list! Two major lakes, three golf courses, public hunting lands, and state parks will keep the outdoor enthusiast busy. Paint Creek Lake and Rocky Fork Lake offer excellent crappie, bass, walleye, and catfish opportunities.
